Embracing Active Aging and Inclusivity: Run Tomo 2024 in Penang

Writer: Li Li ChenLi Li Chen

Today marked a significant step forward as the SITI Network and Positive2U visited Dato' Seri Lawrence from Rose Charities to officiate their collaboration for organizing Run Tomo 2024 in Penang on September 8th. Dato' Seri Lawrence expressed full support for these initiatives, which aim to promote active aging and inclusivity.

As we gear up for this exciting event, I find myself reflecting on my personal journey with Run Tomo and how it has come full circle.

I first encountered Run Tomo in 2017 while presenting papers at the Alzheimer International Conference in Kyoto. The event's vibrant energy and its mission to promote physical activity and community engagement among older adults left a lasting impression on me. I was particularly struck by their inclusivity, welcoming participants of all ages and abilities to come together and break down barriers between generations.

I even got their iconic T-shirt that read "Okinawa to Hokkaido," symbolizing the event's extensive reach across Japan.

With my buddies, we attended the conference in 2017.

Fast forward seven years, and I am now connected to Run Tomo through a collaborator in Penang. This connection feels almost serendipitous, as if my initial encounter with Run Tomo was a prelude to this moment. It is heartening to see how this event has continued to grow and inspire communities worldwide.

Run Tomo has a rich history of encouraging physical activity and community engagement among older adults. Originally started in Japan, the event quickly gained popularity for its inclusive approach and its ability to bring people together. It is more than just a run; it is a celebration of life, health, and community. Participants from all walks of life come together to promote a healthy lifestyle and foster a sense of unity.

As we prepare for Run Tomo 2024 in Penang, I am filled with a sense of anticipation and excitement. This event is an opportunity to not only promote active aging and inclusivity but also to reflect on the journeys that bring us together. It is a reminder that our paths are often interconnected in ways we may not initially realize, leading us to meaningful collaborations and shared goals.

Dato' Seri Lawrence’s support for Run Tomo underscores the importance of these initiatives in our community. By championing active aging and inclusivity, we can create a more vibrant and supportive environment for everyone. I am honored to be part of this journey and look forward to seeing the positive impact Run Tomo 2024 will have on Penang.

In closing, my experience with Run Tomo has come full circle, from my first encounter in Kyoto to this exciting collaboration in Penang. It is a testament to the power of community and the enduring impact of events like Run Tomo.

Let us come together to celebrate active aging, inclusivity, and the shared connections that make our communities stronger.
