Strengthening Our Future: Insights on Bone and Muscle Health

Writer: Li Li ChenLi Li Chen

SITI Network had the pleasure of hosting a highly informative workshop led by Ms. Chloe Teng, the principal physiotherapist from Global Circle Physio & Rehab, Penang at D'Home last Saturday. The workshop focused on critical topics such as sarcopenia, osteoporosis, and fall prevention, aiming to promote a healthier lifestyle among our members.

Understanding Sarcopenia and Osteoporosis

Sarcopenia and osteoporosis are conditions that affect muscle and bone health, respectively. Sarcopenia refers to the gradual loss of muscle mass and strength that occurs with aging, while osteoporosis is characterized by weak and brittle bones, increasing the risk of fractures. These conditions often begin to manifest in adults as early as their 30s and 40s, making early intervention and awareness crucial.

Why It's Important for All Ages

The workshop highlighted that muscle and bone health are vital for individuals of all ages. While the effects of sarcopenia and osteoporosis are more pronounced in older adults, the groundwork for healthy muscles and bones is laid much earlier in life. Engaging in regular physical activity, maintaining a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption are essential steps everyone can take to safeguard their musculoskeletal health.

Active Aging and Health Awareness

SITI Network's active aging arm is dedicated to promoting health awareness and preventive measures to help our members maintain their independence and quality of life as they age. By educating our community about the risks and prevention strategies for conditions like sarcopenia and osteoporosis, we aim to empower individuals to take proactive steps in their health journey.

Workshop Highlights

Ms. Chloe Teng shared invaluable insights and practical tips on how to maintain muscle and bone health. The session was interactive, allowing participants to ask questions and engage in discussions. Some key takeaways included:

  • The importance of strength training exercises to combat muscle loss.

  • Dietary recommendations to ensure adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D.

  • Strategies to prevent falls, such as improving balance and creating a safe home environment.

The workshop was not only educational but also a fantastic opportunity for social interaction. Participants enjoyed meeting new friends and exchanging experiences.

A Delicious Tea Break

Adding to the enjoyment of the day, Mdm Cheah, a valued SITI member, prepared a delightful assortment of Nyonya kuih for our tea break. The colorful and delicious treats were a hit among the attendees, providing a perfect complement to the learning experience.

Looking Ahead

SITI Network remains committed to offering workshops and activities that enhance the well-being of our members. By focusing on preventive health measures and fostering a supportive community, we strive to make a positive impact on the lives of older adults.
